Former Japanese prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, an outspoken politician who jousted with U.S. officials over the auto trade and brought "Big Bang" financial reforms to Tokyo, died on Saturday at the age of 68.
Hashimoto, who retired from politics last September citing poor health, had undergone surgery to remove a large part of his intestine after being rushed to hospital on June 4, his son told a news conference. He died in a Tokyo hospital.

Actor Masumi Okada, who was known for his affectionate personality, has died of throat cancer, his family said. He was 70.

A farewell gathering for Okada will be held at Aoyama funeral hall in the Minami Aoyama district of Minato-ku, Tokyo, on Friday. He is survived by his wife, Keiko.

In 1935, Okada was born in France to a Japanese father and a Danish mother, and moved to Japan four years later. He made his debut as an actor at Nichigeki Music Hall in Tokyo. He had since been active in many films, TV dramas and theaters as an actor and as an emcee in TV variety shows. He had been hospitalized from last year with throat cancer.
