OKIKU'S WELL

A long time ago, a servant named "Okiku" who served the lord of the castle discovered the lord retainer's plot to kill the lord and serve in his place. She warned the lord and the assasination attempt failed, but when the lord retainer discovered Okiku had interfered with his plot he purposely stole one of the ten treasure dishes that were under her custody. She was tourtured to death on the charge of missing the dish, and the chief retainer threw her body into the well. Okiku was loyal to her lord, saved him from being murdered, and when the foiled murderer took revenge on her, the lord, instead of rewarding her for her loyalty and saving her in exchange, let her be tortured to death.From then on, her voice could be heard from the well counting "one dish...two dishes...three dishes..." until the retainer's scheme was discovered and she was absolved of the crime. And her voice was never heard from the well again.

姫路城の中に石柱に囲まれた古い井戸があります。

この井戸には、怪談話が伝わっています。

姫路城の執権であった青山鉄山は、城を乗っ取ろうと町坪弾四朗と相談していました。

城主の家来、衣笠元信は、鉄山一味の計画に気づき、お菊を鉄山の家に女中として住み込ませました。

しかし陰謀は成功し、姫路城は鉄山のものになってしまいました。

その後もお菊は、鉄山の屋敷に残り、元信のために鉄山の様子をさぐり続けていました。

しかしお菊は、とうとう弾四朗に感づかれてしまい、結婚するなら見逃してやるといったが、

お菊は聞くはずありません。

弾四朗は、怒って「こもがえのぐそく皿」という毒消しの家宝の皿を一枚隠しました。

お菊は、「こもがえのぐそく皿」の皿を箱にしまおうとしていました。

十枚あるはずの皿が一枚足りません。

震える手で、何度も何度も数えなおしましたが、九枚しかありません。

弾四朗はこのことを騒ぎたて、お菊を裏庭の松につりさげると、竹刀で全身をたたき、せめつづけました。

それでも、お菊が言うことを聞かないとみると、ついにお菊を切り殺し、庭の井戸に投げ捨てました。

それ以来、毎夜、井戸の底から、女のか細い声が聞こえるようになりました。

「一枚、二枚、三枚、四枚、五枚、六枚、七枚、八枚、九枚」

すすり泣きながら、皿を数えるお菊の悲しげな声でした。

それは九枚まで数えるととまり、また最初の一枚から何回も数えなおすのです。

その後、鉄山一味は元信らによって滅ぼされて、姫路城は元の城主にもどりました。
