Doctor: Does this heartburn run in your family ?

Patient: No- and I can say what you're getting at, There weren't and there aren't any alcoholic in my family. The damage from spirits I've seen was in my wife's brother. He died of cirrhosis of the liver. I'm sure there's only booze like causes that- and it's nearly always caused by spirits.....I'm not like that- that's not me.

Doctor: Alright- getting back to you- do any particular foods seem to bring on your heartburn ?

Patient: Well of all things cucumber seems to have a bad effect. I can always tell if I've had any cucumber- I get terrible heartburn. It's so bad , if I'm out and somebody offers me a salmon and cucumber sandwich....then even if I take all the cucumber out before I eat it. It's still enough to set my heartburn off.

Doctor: I see- a hypersensitivity to cucumber, no matter how little contact.

Patient: Yes, sometimes I think just seeing a cucumber in the supermarket is enough . So I never touch it, it just sets me off shocking.

Doctor: But can't be all, can it ? I mean suppose you avoid cucumber like the plaque and still you get attacks of heartburn...... it can be just cucumber, can it ?

Patient: No, I suppose not, what , then ?
